Residents of Ranchi’s Ward 15 Protest 35-Day Water Supply Failure
Ranchi: Residents of Baldev Sahay Lane in Ward No. 15, near Karbala Chowk in the heart of Ranchi, spilled onto the streets on Monday to protest 35 consecutive days without piped water supply, their anger finally boiling over under one of the harshest summers the Jharkhand capital has seen in recent years.
The demonstration brought together men, women, and children, many of whom marched carrying empty pots and vessels to drive home the scale of their deprivation. With temperatures in Ranchi continuing to climb, residents say the absence of drinking water has turned daily life into a crisis. “Must ordinary people take to the streets every time they need something as basic as water?” several protesters demanded.
Locals say they had repeatedly filed complaints with the relevant municipal department over the past several weeks, but received no lasting resolution. Left with no other recourse, they said, they had been forced to resort to public protest.
Following the demonstration, officials from the department met with residents and offered assurances that work to restore the water supply was being accelerated, with a target to normalise the situation by Tuesday. On the strength of that commitment, the protesters called off a road blockade they had staged, but not without a warning. Residents made clear that if the supply is not restored promptly, they will return with a significantly larger agitation.
For now, the hopes of an entire neighbourhood parched through five weeks of sweltering heat rest on the word of the administration.
