Wuhan Taxi Driver Hailed a Hero After Race to Save Unconscious Toddler

A taxi driver in central China is being celebrated online after going to extraordinary lengths to help save the life of a three-year-old girl who suddenly lost consciousness.

The incident took place in Wuhan, Hubei province, on June 5, according to mainland media outlet Ping An Hubei, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

The girl, referred to by the pseudonym Yanyan, had developed a fever at home before abruptly losing consciousness. Her family immediately called emergency services, but were told an ambulance would take at least 20 minutes to arrive due to heavy evening rush-hour traffic.

With no time to spare, the family rushed the child out of their residential compound and flagged down a taxi that had just picked up two passengers. Upon seeing the girl’s critical condition, the passengers instantly stepped out and gave up their ride.

A Race Against Time

The driver, identified as Wang Tao, sped toward the nearby Tongji Hospital while trying to piece together what had happened. Yanyan’s mother sat in the front passenger seat while her grandmother cradled the unconscious child in the back.

As he navigated through traffic, Wang did his best to keep the family calm and reassured, all while contacting traffic police to alert them that he was transporting a critically ill child and needed help clearing the route ahead.

To shave off precious minutes, Wang drove through several red lights and briefly veered into the oncoming lane. Despite his efforts, heavy congestion eventually brought the taxi to a complete stop near the hospital.

Rather than wait, Wang pulled over and asked the family to hand him the child, reasoning that he could run faster than they could.

He then carried Yanyan and sprinted toward the hospital. A passing resident on an electric bicycle spotted the urgency of the situation and helped him get the child to the emergency department.

In total, less than 30 minutes elapsed between the onset of Yanyan’s symptoms and her arrival at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency unit.

Recovery and Recognition

Following treatment, Yanyan was declared out of danger. The exact cause of her sudden loss of consciousness has not been disclosed.

In the aftermath, the grateful family reached out to Wang multiple times in an attempt to reward him for his actions, but he repeatedly declined to accept anything in return.

Wang, who is originally from Liaoning province in northeastern China, said his 12 years of living and driving in Wuhan gave him an intimate knowledge of the city’s roads and traffic patterns — knowledge that proved vital in getting Yanyan to the hospital in time.

The story has since circulated widely online, with many praising Wang’s quick thinking, selflessness, and refusal of compensation as an example of everyday heroism.
