GI Tags Of Jammu & Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir, the crown of India nestled in the Himalayas, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unique products shaped by its diverse geography, from the fertile Kashmir Valley to the high-altitude mountains of Jammu and Ladakh regions. The Union Territory has built an impressive Geographical Indication (GI) portfolio that protects products whose distinctive qualities stem from its unique terroir, centuries-old traditional knowledge, and skilled craftsmanship of local communities.
With registrations beginning in 2005 and accelerating significantly between 2018 and 2023, these GI tags cover premium agricultural produce, traditional foods, and some of the world’s finest handicrafts. Supported by the Department of Agriculture, handicraft boards, and artisan cooperatives, these registrations help combat imitation, empower farmers and artisans (especially women), enhance market value and exports, preserve endangered crafts and crop varieties, and promote tourism to the region.
